Abstract:The dysfunction of theory of mind (ToM) plays a pivotal role in the presence of alcohol dependence and alcohol-related problems. Prior studies have used various paradigms of ToM to examine alcohol dependents’ ToM and found that alcohol dependents displayed ToM impairments relative to healthy populations.Such impairments of alcohol dependents were closely associated with their alcohol abuse behaviors. Alcohol dependents’ ToM were influenced by executive functions, autobiographical memory, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. Future researches are needed to (1) introduce more objective ToM tasks to examine alcohol dependents’ ToM, (2) clarify the effects of demographic characteristics, cognitive and emotional factors on alcohol dependents’ ToM, (3) investigate the causal relationships between ToM and alcohol abuse and the recovery from ToM impairments in alcohol dependents.
