Abstract:Emotional victim effect is that the emotionality of a victim's demeanor affects perceived credibility, a victim who behaves in an emotionally agitated manner, with clear signs of discomfort, tends to be believed more readily and is more likely to be considered a ‘real’ victim. Emotional victim effect can be explained with reference to observers’ stereotypical expectations about how victims normally behave, arouses the observer's sympathy. Many factors from victims and observers will affect the actual effect. Future research needs to pay more attention to the complex impact of the emotional changes of victims and observers, as well as case related factors on the emotional victim effect, and explore effective strategies to reduce this effect.
