Abstract:The present study aimedto compare the effectsof perceptual and conceptual fluency on subsequent recognition memory and priming effects.Masked repetition priming paradigm was used in the experiment 1 to investigate the effect of perceptual fluency on subsequent recognition memory and priming effect. Masked conceptual priming paradigm was used in the experiment 2 to investigate the effect of conceptual fluency on subsequent recognition memory and priming effect. The results of experiment 1 revealed that perceptual fluency affected subsequent recollection-based recognitionbuthad no effect on subsequent familiarity and primingeffect. The results of experiment 2 revealed that conceptual fluency affected subsequent familiarity-based recognition and priming effectbut had no effect on subsequent recollection. These results indicate that the mechanisms of how perceptual and conceptual fluency affect subsequent recognition memory and priming are different.
