The Psychological Mechanisms of Redistributive Preferences and Its Enlightenments to Common Prosperity

Abstract：Redistributive preferences refer to the degree to which people support or prefer redistributive policies. Its psychological mechanisms have always been the focus of theory and research in this field. To this end, researchers have proposed three different perspectives. The first perspective is the self-interest perspective, which suggests that one’s redistributive preferences are motivated by economic self-interest. The second perspective is the fair cognition perspective, also called the ideology hypothesis. This perspective argues that in addition to economic self-interest, one’s beliefs about social fairness and equality can also influence redistributive preferences. The third perspective is the social sampling perspective. This perspective depicts social sampling processes in which individuals make biased estimates about economic self-interest and social fairness by referring to their social circles. Future research should adopt an integrated perspective, draw on the findings of similar fields to explore other possible mechanisms, deeply seek political behavioral outcomes and let redistributive preferences research play a more important role in achieving common prosperity.
